EA Cancels Black Panther Game and Closes Cliffhanger Games

Electronic Arts (EA) has officially canceled its highly anticipated Black Panther video game and closed Cliffhanger Games, the Seattle-based studio behind the project. This decision is part of EA’s broader restructuring efforts to focus on its core franchises and streamline operations.
A Promising Project Cut Short
Announced in July 2023, the Black Panther game was to be a single-player, third-person action-adventure title developed in collaboration with Marvel Games. Cliffhanger Games, led by industry veteran Kevin Stephens, aimed to deliver an immersive experience set in the rich world of Wakanda. The game was envisioned as the first in a planned three-game partnership between EA and Marvel, which also includes an upcoming Iron Man game and another unannounced title
While specific gameplay details were scarce, reports suggest that players would have assumed the role of Azari, the son of T’Challa, navigating a narrative involving the Skrulls as antagonists. Concept art hinted at expansive Wakandan landscapes and intricate character designs.
Industry-Wide Restructuring
The cancellation comes amid a series of layoffs and project terminations within EA. In April, the company dismissed 300 to 400 employees and canceled a new Titanfall game. The closure of Cliffhanger Games marks EA’s third significant restructuring effort in 2025, reflecting a strategic retreat from developing licensed intellectual properties in favor of internally owned brands such as Apex Legends, The Sims, and Battlefield.
EA Entertainment president Laura Miele stated in an internal email that these decisions aim to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” The company has expressed commitment to assisting affected employees in finding new roles within EA.
Developer and Fan Reactions
The news has elicited strong reactions from both the development team and fans. Concept artist Karla Ortiz described the project as “detailed, rich, beautiful,” expressing heartbreak over its cancellation. Senior environment architect Freddie Lee praised the team’s collaboration and creativity.
Fans have taken to social media platforms to voice their disappointment, with some criticizing EA’s handling of the project and expressing concern over the company’s direction regarding single-player, narrative-driven games.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, EA continues to develop other major titles, including the Iron Man game at Motive Studios, the third installment in the Star Wars: Jedi series, and a new Mass Effect game.
Meanwhile, Black Panther fans can look forward to Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, an upcoming game from Skydance New Media featuring both Captain America and Black Panther as playable characters. Set in Occupied Paris during World War II, the game is scheduled for release in early 2026.
